Dyffryn ABC enjoy special Schools and Minors Championships
The 2024 Welsh Boxing National Schools and Minors Championships were particularly special for Dyffryn ABC, and the Davies family connected to the club.
Among Dyffryn’s four national champions at the event, Morgan Davies and Meilir Davies won the Schools B 36kg and Schools B 38kg categories respectively, with the former retaining his title.
What made the achievement so special was the fact that the boys are not only brothers, but twins.
“The club were thrilled that the twins both won the Welsh Championships,” Dyffryn’s Wesley Jones told Welsh Boxing. “They both train really hard and are a credit to the gym.”
“I am extremely happy about winning the Welsh Championships this year with my brother, as I didn’t get the opportunity last year,” Welsh Schools B 38kg champion Meilir commented. “This is something I am very proud of, having worked hard all season.”
His twin and Welsh Schools B 36kg champion, Morgan, added:
“I’m very happy to have won the Welsh Championships for the second year running, especially with my brother winning it by my side.”
Alongside the twins, Dyffryn’s Charlie Sheen (right) and Riley Hughes (second from right) took home the Minor A 38.5kg and Minor B 37kg titles respectively at the Schools and Minors Championships. Kegan Jones was also successful at the Elite, Youth and Junior National Championships, winning the Youth 63.5kg category to make it five national champions for the club in 2024 and giving Welsey a very personal highlight.
“The club was thrilled this season to have five Welsh champions in total,” he said, “and my own son Kegan winning in the Youth 63.5kg category inspired everyone else to get their vests!”
It’s brilliant to see our clubs put such commitment into providing opportunities for young people across Welsh communities.
Results at National Championships are the result of that grassroots dedication, and it’s clear to see that the team at Dyffryn and their boxers put a lot of time in.
“We always put a lot of focus on the Welsh Championships and last year was the first year in 18 years we had no champions,” Wesley concluded, “so we were determined to put that right.
“In the 18 years since I’ve been coaching, we’ve had outstanding success and have now had 61 champions in that period.”
