How Mold ABC has soared in its infancy and aims to do even more for the local community

Mold ABC provides a perfect example of the impact of boxing in local communities.

Having opened not even a year ago, the club has seen remarkable engagement from young people in the area and has even provided a safe space for some previously involved in gangs.

It is clearly a productive environment for those who go and engage with boxing at the club, with Mold ABC – despite its infancy – boasting two Welsh champions at the Novice Champs earlier this year.

“The club’s success has been outstanding,” Michael Phillips from Mold ABC told us, “and neither of those boxers had any experience before joining us!

“Currently, our gym is operating at full capacity, with a waiting list of over 60 individuals.

“As we search for a new location to accommodate more members, the decrease in antisocial behaviour surrounding our area is testament to the positive impact Mold ABC and its dedicated coaches have had on these young lives.

“This success is exemplified by our novice championships, where we proudly crowned two champions in our inaugural year.”

And those titles have done nothing but good for the club and its community.

“The youngsters now harbour self-belief, witnessing their peers transition from unengaged street dwellers to champions who positively contribute to the community,” explained Michael.

“The notable shift from societal outcasts to engaged, successful community members has fuelled a surge in interest, leading to a substantial waiting list for Mold ABC. Youngsters aspire to join our gym to improve themselves, seeking guidance and passion to chart their own successful journey. Our vision is to not only uplift these children but also enhance family dynamics by providing parents with tools to understand and support their children effectively.”

Bringing the provision of boxing to the local community, Mold ABC has clearly made an impact in its area.

The club, and the sport in general, has contributed to a sense of community across its engaged audience, while also supporting improved mental and physical wellbeing. And Michael believes the club can go further.

“Mold ABC aspires to evolve into a community hub, especially during these challenging times following the pandemic. By offering mental health support and guidance to individuals experiencing distress, we aim to prevent breakdowns and foster a supportive community environment.

“Our future plans involve programs to educate and involve parents, as stable familial environments are crucial for children's holistic development.”

Mold ABC require a larger facility in order to realise this vision.

“We are actively seeking support from various stakeholders to expand our operations,” confirmed Michael. “Collaborating with youth services, schools, and community organisations is pivotal to actualising our ambitious goals.

“While securing funding for an appropriate venue comes with significant costs, the long-term benefits in enhancing lives and saving on healthcare expenditures far outweigh the initial investment.”

Sport Wales’ Be Active Wales Fund is a key resource for clubs in Mold’s position, although it comes with challenge for boxing clubs aiming to provide a holistic approach to training and resources for young people.

“There are several challenges in the Be Active Wales Fund process from a boxing perspective,” Michael stated, “as boxing clubs require more than just basic equipment such as rings, pads, and bags.

“One of the primary concerns is the transition of young individuals from the streets and away from negative influences like gangs towards a positive environment. Asking these kids to engage in outdoor running exposes them to potential risks, and underscores the necessity for fitness machines within the gym, creating a safe space for physical activity away from harmful environments.”

Michael went on to address other concerns around having to get youngsters to run and train outside of the club environment, such as weather conditions and development issues caused by running on harsh surfaces.

“By addressing these concerns and providing a safe, controlled environment for physical exercise, boxing clubs can offer a conducive space for individuals to develop their athletic skills and overall wellbeing without compromising their health or long-term commitment to the sport.”

It is without doubt that developing the club, and other boxing gyms across Wales, with advanced fitness machines and training facilities would be hugely beneficial for young boxers and their clubs.

From higher quality training to ensured wellbeing, boxing clubs require grants to be able to make these advancements for the good of their athletes.

“The inclusion of advanced fitness machines in Mold ABC would not only improve the boxers' physical capabilities but also enhance their overall training experience, safety, and performance,” Michael summarised.

“This investment would be essential in elevating the standard of training, fostering a culture of excellence, and potentially producing more successful champions in the future.”
