Welsh Boxing Announces Fran Russell as Lead for ‘Built Different’ Project

Welsh Boxing is delighted to announce the appointment of Fran Russell as the Welsh Lead for Built Different, an ambitious new project that uses the power of boxing to support young people and drive social change. This role will play a vital part in highlighting the positive impact boxing can have not only on individuals but also on wider communities, as the sport continues to demonstrate its ability to inspire, engage, and transform lives.

Built Different is part of a wider strategy for Welsh Boxing to encourage more young people to get active. It is predominantly a research project that hopes to prove boxing’s power to bring about social change while providing safe, structured opportunities for those who may be at risk of being drawn into crime or violence. The project is being delivered in collaboration with England Boxing, the Youth Endowment Fund, and other key partners, and Welsh Boxing is excited to see the programme take shape across communities.

Local boxing clubs will be at the heart of this project, delivering sessions that combine skill development, discipline, and fitness. Clubs interested in being involved will benefit from resources, support, and funding to run high-quality programmes, while playing a key role in shaping young people’s futures and showcasing the sport’s positive influence.

With over 12 years as a fencing coach, alongside roles with British Fencing and eight years on the board of Welsh Fencing, Fran has a proven record of using sport to inspire young people. Combined with experience as a teaching assistant supporting disadvantaged children in schools, this background will now be channelled into ensuring Built Different delivers maximum impact for young people in Wales.

Speaking about the role, Fran said: “I’m hugely excited to be named the Welsh Lead for Built Different. Having been around various sports in my life, I am a great believer that sport has a power to change lives. It can engage and inspire young people to be the best versions of themselves. Boxing is especially unique in what it offers. The discipline, respect, and resilience that come from training in the gym can give young people confidence, focus, and a strong sense of purpose that extends far beyond the ring. I am looking forward to working with clubs and coaches in Wales to bring this project to life”

Gareth Evans, Head of Community Boxing for Welsh Boxing has said: I am delighted that Fran has joined us as part of the team at Welsh Boxing. I am really looking forward to seeing the impact she can make in the community space. The learnings taken from the Built Different programme will be shared with our Activators in order to enhance their roles and opportunities. I am looking forward to seeing what happens as the project progresses.

Welsh Boxing looks forward to working closely with England Boxing and the wider team of partners to bring Built Different to life. Together, we believe this project will not only create opportunities for young people but also strengthen the role of boxing as a driving force for positive change across Wales and beyond.
