Welsh Boxing’s Hooked Programme Inspires Pupils with First Gym Experience
Welsh Boxing recently visited Bobby’s Gym, where Welsh Boxing Community Activator Angelo Dragone has been delivering The Hooked Programme to pupils from Drefach and Cross Hands schools. Over the past six weeks, Angelo has been working directly in school yards and sports halls to introduce young people to the fundamentals of boxing. Earlier this month after 6 weeks of training in a school setting pupils of Drefach and Cross Hands went to Bobby’s Gym in Llanelli to experience a boxing gym for the first time and further their physical development.
Throughout the six weeks, the children responded incredibly positively. Angelo noted how much they enjoyed the sessions, embraced the challenges, and grew in confidence each week. Many showed real enthusiasm for the sport, with some demonstrating impressive natural ability.
Bringing Boxing Into Schools
Angelo explained that his role as a community activator has allowed him to connect with schools in the area and provide structured boxing sessions focused on technique, discipline, and enjoyment.
“We’ve been drilling different techniques, improving their skills, and just seeing the kids enjoy the physical side of boxing. It works wonders for mental and physical health,” stated Angelo
Supporting Local Clubs
Angelo believes programmes like this can make a big difference for local amateur gyms, particularly new clubs like Bobby’s -
“When you’re in school it’s always football or rugby, you rarely get the opportunity to try boxing,” he said. “Bringing boxing into communities across Wales is amazing. Gyms like Bobby’s need people coming through the door. Hopefully this work brings new members and maybe even future champions.”
Over the coming months Angelo and the other 4 Welsh Boxing Community Activators are going to be bringing more boxing training into communities around Wales showcasing what our sport has to offer.
