New Report Released Around White Collar Boxing
Welsh Boxing, together with England Boxing, Boxing Scotland, and the British Boxing Board of Control, has collaborated with Sheffield Hallam University, to conduct an in-depth piece of research that looks into the practices and risks associated with White Collar Boxing. The report titled ‘The Case for Regulation of White Collar Boxing’ provides a deeper insight into the unregulated sector of the sport and its implications for clubs and members nationwide.
White Collar Boxing is often organised by private promoters and exists outside the governance of Welsh Boxing. Due to this, it is not regulated to the same safety standards that apply to amateur boxing.
This research examines common practices within unlicensed events and highlights concerns over a lack of regulation which may encourage unethical behaviour, compromise on boxer welfare and also create legal/reputational risks that could impact the future of the sport.
At Welsh Boxing, our top priority is to promote a safe and structured environment for all who step into the ring. We enforce strict safety regulations, provide comprehensive training for coaches and officials, and work tirelessly to uphold the integrity of the sport.
While White Collar Boxing operates separately, this research reinforces the urgent need for clearer regulatory frameworks to ensure participant safety and protect the long-term future of boxing. We will continue to engage with stakeholders and governing bodies to advocate for stronger safeguards and greater awareness of the risks posed by unregulated events.
We are pleased to publish this report in the lead-up to a range of targeted consultations being conducted by the Department for Culture Media & Sport (DCMS) and Home Office, with a view to what we hope will result in a swift updating of statutory guidance for licensing of boxing events. We have also been in close contact with Welsh Government about this consultation process.
Welsh Boxing remains committed to fostering a culture of safety, fairness, and excellence in the sport, ensuring that boxing remains a positive and well-regulated discipline for all.
