Pontyclun ABC wins big in Belfast

Pontyclun Amateur Boxing Club made the trip to Northern Ireland for the Belfast Box Cup and returned home with one gold and one silver medal.

It was a weekend to remember for the South Wales club, who took two boxers across the Irish Sea and came away with top performances and valuable experience.

First up was Carter Ronan, who boxed superbly all weekend, sticking to his instructions and not losing a single round across his bouts. His efforts were rewarded with a gold medal and the title of Belfast Box Cup Champion 2025.

Next in action was Bailey, who bravely stepped up a weight category to ensure more competitive bouts. In his first fight, Bailey produced a brilliant performance to defeat the Irish National Champion, before narrowly missing out in the final on a close split-decision — earning a well-deserved silver medal for his efforts.

Head Coach Mathew Robinson expressed his pride in the team’s performance and conduct throughout the weekend:

“Extremely happy with the outcome — the boys put a lot of work into training for several weeks getting ready for this championship. Taking a boxer away to compete is a crucial part of their development, both as an athlete and as a person.

Competing away from home challenges a boxer to adapt to new environments, unfamiliar crowds, and different styles of opponents — all of which build resilience and confidence.

Experiencing different venues, referees, and competition standards also helps them grow tactically, teaching them how to adjust quickly under pressure.”

A fantastic showing from Pontyclun ABC, congratulations from all of us at Welsh Boxing on a very successful weekend.
