Welsh Boxing Awards Five New Life Memberships
At the 2025 Annual General Meeting, Welsh Boxing proudly awarded Life Memberships to five outstanding individuals who have each given decades of dedicated service to the sport. Nominated by the membership and approved by the Welsh Boxing Board, these honours recognise exceptional commitment and contribution to boxing in Wales.
This year’s recipients are:
Graham Brockway (Merlins Bridge, West)
Brian Ahmed (Prince of Wales, South)
Gary Meredith (R&J, West)
David ‘Butch’ Jones (Maelor, North)
Tudor Davies (Caerau Dragons, South)
Graham Brockway – Merlins Bridge (West)
This year marks 35 years since Graham became head coach of Merlins Bridge Boxing Club, a role he has held since 1990. Having boxed from the age of 10 at Pembroke BC, Graham went on to become a world champion in kickboxing before returning to boxing as a coach. Under his guidance, Merlins Bridge has produced Welsh, British and international champions, including Commonwealth Games medallist Micky McDonagh. Now in his 55th year in the sport, Graham remains hands-on, running the gym, leading West Division coaching teams, and investing countless hours to ensure his club thrives.
Brian Ahmed – Prince of Wales (South)
Brian’s lifelong journey in boxing spans over 50 years. A decorated amateur, he represented both Wales and Bangladesh internationally, securing a bronze medal at the Asian Games. As head coach of the Prince of Wales ABC in Cardiff, Brian built a hugely successful club, three times winners of the Jim Driscoll Champion Club of Wales Shield. He has also contributed at national team level and continues to serve as Vice Chair of WABA’s Southern Division. His impact on the South Wales boxing community is immeasurable.
Gary Meredith – R&J (West)
A former boxer with over 50 contests, Gary transitioned to officiating after his competitive career. Since 2010, he has risen to become one of Wales’ most respected referees and judges, achieving IBA 3-star status and officiating across the UK and Europe. As West Division Supervisor and National Trainer for new R&Js, Gary plays a vital role in upholding standards and nurturing the next generation of officials in Wales.
David "Butch" Jones – Maelor (North)
For nearly 50 years, Butch has led Maelor ABC, developing generations of young boxers in the North. He served as Northern Divisional Coach and continues to contribute as Vice Chair of the Northern Division. Renowned for his dedication and consistency, Butch has given his life to boxing in the region, rarely missing a meeting, training session, or opportunity to support his club and division.
Tudor Davies – Caerau Dragons (South)
With over 65 years in the sport, Tudor’s story is one of lifelong service. From his days as a Welsh international boxer to decades of coaching at clubs including Croeserw, Cymmer Afan, and Cwmavon Hornets, Tudor has helped countless champions fulfil their potential. In the late 1990s, he founded Caerau Dragons, a community club that remains a thriving hub 25 years on. Still active today, Tudor continues to support both his club and Welsh Boxing.
