Welsh Boxing Chairman Paul Thorogood MBE Welcomes home Colorado Heroes
On November 12th, we hosted a special homecoming event at Sport Wales National Centre to celebrate the outstanding achievements of four of our Programme boxers who recently competed at the 2024 Youth World Boxing Championships in Colorado. The event brought together athletes, coaches, supporters, and key stakeholders to recognise the team's remarkable performances on the world stage.
Welsh Boxing Chairman Paul Thorogood MBE, welcomed the boxers back stating. “I want to congratulate the four boxers here today, but also a huge thank you to Adam Park and the coaching team for their fantastic work. This success bodes really well for Welsh Boxing as we look ahead to the Commonwealth Games.”
He also took the opportunity to thank the vital partners who help make Welsh Boxing’s success possible: “If it wasn't for the support of Sport Wales, Welsh Government, and our sponsors, we would not be able to achieve this. We are incredibly grateful for everything you do for us.”
The event honoured the boxers’ achievements at the championships in Colorado, where Dan Pitt made history by claiming gold in the 85kg category—becoming only Welsh Boxing’s second-ever world champion. Milwyn Lloyd and Mikey O'Sullivan both earned bronze medals in their respective divisions, while Alfie Lewis, the youngest member of the team, gained valuable experience competing at such a high level.
Welsh Boxing ambassadors Eddie Avoth, Lee Selby, and Taylor Bevan were also in attendance to present each boxer with a personalised frame to commemorate their success in the tournament. The afternoon continued with a Q&A session, where the boxers and coaches shared their experiences and insights from their time in Colorado.
