Welsh Boxing Delighted by Commonwealth Games 2026 Announcement
Welsh Boxing is thrilled to announce that boxing will be included as one of the 10 sports in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, set to take place in Glasgow. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has once again demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and the positive impact of sport, and Welsh Boxing is proud to be part of this life-changing global movement.
The 2026 Games in Glasgow promise to embody the CGF’s vision of “The Games for Everyone,” showcasing world-class athletes from 74 nations and territories across the Commonwealth. Boxing, a sport deeply rooted in Welsh culture, will be an essential part of this celebration of excellence, with its inclusion marking an opportunity for Wales to continue building on its proud history of sporting success.
Reflecting on the announcement, Welsh Boxing CEO Colin Metson said:
“We are absolutely delighted that boxing will be included in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Commonwealth Games are unique in how they bring people together from across the globe, celebrating not only athletic achievement but also inclusivity and diversity. Boxing has always played a significant role for Team Wales, and we look forward to another opportunity to showcase the immense talent we have in this country on such a prestigious stage.”
Wales has a rich tradition of success at the Commonwealth Games, particularly in boxing, which saw tremendous achievements in Birmingham 2022. Welsh boxers brought home six medals, a sporting high for Wales at the games continuing a long legacy of boxing excellence. Their determination and performance demonstrated the importance of the Commonwealth Games as a platform for Welsh athletes to compete on the world stage while representing their nation with pride.
The Commonwealth Games have been a pivotal moment in the careers of many Welsh boxers, launching them into the international spotlight and propelling them to new heights, recently Lauren Price, a gold medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, went on to become an Olympic gold medalist in 2021. Price’s success at the Commonwealth Games was a defining moment in her career, opening the doors to her becoming one of the most dominant forces in women’s boxing.
Adam Park, Head of Performance for Welsh Boxing, shared his excitement:
“The Commonwealth Games play a crucial role in the development of our athletes. We have seen from previous Commonwealth Games that is a steppingstone onto delivering medals at the Olympic Games. Wales is a hugely passionate Nation and for many of our boxers, it’s a chance to represent Wales on a global stage and the only opportunity they get to represent Wales in a multi-sport Major Championships. The results in 2022 for Welsh Boxing were record breaking, and we are excited to continue that momentum in 2026.”
We at Welsh Boxing look forward to continuing our journey of success on the international stage, where our athletes will once again proudly compete for their nation, their sport, and their communities.
