Welsh Boxing welcomes the International Olympic Committee’s provisional recognition of World Boxing

Welsh Boxing is delighted that the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has given World Boxing provisional recognition as the International Federation for boxing within the Olympic Movement.

“The IOC’s decision helps to secure the future of boxing within the Olympic movement and Welsh Boxing looks forward to working more closely with World Boxing in its efforts to secure boxing’s place in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles” said Paul Thorogood, Chairman of Welsh Boxing.

Launched in April 2023, World Boxing was established in response to the IOC starting the process of stripping the IBA of its status as the International Governing Body for Boxing within the Olympic movement.  Welsh Boxing attended the inaugural World Boxing Congress in November 2023 and was among the first federations to join its ranks.

With boxing still not included in the list of sports for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 World Boxing has acknowledged that there is still work to do to secure Boxing’s Olympic status. Welsh Boxing will do all it can to ensure boxing has full Olympic status.

“Olympic status is fundamentally important for the sport at every level,” said Thorogood. “Olympic status helps attract youngsters to the sport and inspires them to stay in boxing as they grow older. We look forward to working closely with GB Boxing and World Boxing to ensure that boxing can secure its rightful place at Los Angeles 2028.”
