Welsh Boxing is pleased to announce the appointment of Oliver West as its new Community Director.
Oliver joins the Welsh Boxing Board with more than five years of experience working within community sport, alongside a background in sport within education. His experience supporting grassroots organisations, developing inclusive opportunities and working closely with sporting communities will bring valuable insight to the organisation as Welsh Boxing continues to strengthen its community offer across Wales.
Speaking about what attracted him to the opportunity, Oliver said:
“I was attracted to the opportunity because I’m passionate about community sport. Boxing plays an important role within different communities across the whole country.”
“I couldn’t pass up a great opportunity to join a well-respected National Governing Body.”
Oliver’s professional experience has seen him work across a number of roles within community and inclusion-focused sport.
Oliver most recently worked with Sported, a sports charity and national partner of Sport Wales, where he is the National Delivery Officer for Mid and West Wales. In this role, he provides support and acts as a key point of contact for more than 150 grassroots sports clubs across the region.
Before joining Sported, Oliver worked as an Inclusion Officer at Scarlets Rugby and as a WRU Hub Officer, giving him a broad understanding of community sport, inclusion and the role that sporting organisations can play in creating opportunities for people and communities.
Reflecting on the experience he brings to the role, Oliver said:
“I’ve been involved within community sport for the last 5+ years and before that sport within education.”
“My most recent role is with Sported, for whom I’m the National Delivery Officer for Mid and West Wales, offering support and a point of contact to over 150 grassroots sports clubs across Mid and West Wales.”
As he begins his role with Welsh Boxing, Oliver is keen to ensure that the voices of grassroots clubs are heard and reflected in the organisation’s decision-making.
His message to Welsh Boxing members, clubs, coaches and athletes is clear:
“I’m looking forward to joining, giving the Welsh boxing community clubs a voice and placing the grassroots clubs at the heart of decision making.”
Oliver’s appointment further strengthens the community experience and expertise within the Welsh Boxing Board, supporting the organisation’s commitment to putting clubs, communities and grassroots boxing at the centre of its future.
With his experience supporting grassroots sport across Wales, Oliver will play an important role in ensuring Welsh Boxing continues to listen to, support and create opportunities for the clubs and communities that form the foundation of the sport.
