Congratulations Anthony Wynne MBE
The Welsh Boxing community is celebrating an extraordinary achievement as Tony Wynne, a revered figure in amateur boxing, has been awarded an MBE for services to amateur boxing. This accolade is a fitting tribute to a lifetime of volunteering to our sport, spanning eight decades.
Born before the outbreak of the Second World War, Tony’s journey into boxing began in the early 1950s as a means of self-defense against neighborhood bullies. Under the guidance of his father, he quickly found his footing in the sport and went on to claim a Welsh Cadets title. A southpaw known for his fitness and tenacity, Tony’s competitive career reached its pinnacle in 1967 when he became the Welsh Senior Champion. Representing Wales 17 times on the international stage, he secured 13 victories.
Upon retiring from competition, Tony transitioned seamlessly into a leadership role within the sport. Over the past 54 years as a volunteer, he has excelled as an international-level referee and judge, officiating matches involving some of the greatest names in boxing history, including Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and Naseem Hamed. His expertise was sought at major events such as the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh (1986) and Auckland (1990).
Additionally, Mr Wynne has provided distinguished service as an administrator. He was Wales Official in Charge (OIC) for over 30 years, acted as Wales Team Manager for the boxing squads at both the 2013 World Championships in Kazakhstan and 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and was a National Selector.
Tony recently vacated his long standing position as Chairman and Tournament Supervisor of the Southern Division of Welsh Boxing but he continues to be involved as a highly regarded judge.
Tony Wynne’s MBE is a testament to a life dedicated to Welsh amateur boxing. His legacy is etched into the fabric of the sport, and his recognition serves as a reminder of his dedication, resilience and passion for boxing. Congratulations, Tony, on this well-deserved honour!
