Prince William Presents MBE to Welsh Boxing Legend Tony Wynne
The Welsh Boxing community is celebrating an extraordinary achievement as Tony Wynne, a revered figure in amateur boxing, has been awarded an MBE for services to the sport. Tony has officially received this honour from Prince William, recognising a lifetime of dedication spanning eight decades.
Born before the Second World War, Tony began boxing in the early 1950s as self-defense against bullies. Under his father’s guidance, he won a Welsh Cadets title and later reached the pinnacle of his career in 1967 as Welsh Senior Champion. Representing Wales 17 times internationally, he secured 13 victories.
After retiring from competition, Tony devoted the past 54 years to volunteering as an international referee and judge, officiating bouts involving legends such as Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and Naseem Hamed. He also served at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh (1986) and Auckland (1990).
Mr Wynne has also been a distinguished administrator, serving as Wales Official in Charge for over 30 years, Wales Team Manager at the 2013 World Championships in Kazakhstan and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and as a National Selector.
Although he has stepped down as Chairman and Tournament Supervisor of the Southern Division of Welsh Boxing, Tony remains involved as a highly respected judge.
Tony Wynne’s MBE is a fitting tribute to his remarkable legacy and lifelong service to Welsh amateur boxing. Congratulations, Tony, on this well-deserved honour!
