Welsh Boxing's Success with WSA's Content & Comms Plus Service

In December 2022, we became the first organisation to adopt the Welsh Sports Association's (WSA) Content & Comms Plus service. Nearly two years later, after substantial growth in our online presence and community engagement, we are proud to have recruited a full-time content and communications staff member, marking our progression from the initial package.

Building a Strong Foundation

The Content & Comms Plus service, delivered by WSA’s Communications and Policy Officer Max Parsons, was instrumental in helping Welsh Boxing establish and grow our social media presence. “The package enabled us to build a strong base to enable us to grow our social media presence,” said Welsh Boxing CEO Colin Metson. “Max’s work on establishing the regular stories and contact was fundamental in proving the value of what great content could achieve.”

Dramatic Growth in Social Media Presence

Thanks to the bespoke support provided by Max across our Facebook and Instagram platforms, Welsh Boxing has seen a remarkable increase in engagement. Over the past 18 months, our Facebook reach skyrocketed to 1.5 million—a nearly 1000% increase compared to the previous equivalent period. Facebook interactions surged by 624% to over 144,000, with profile visits increasing by 328% to 466,000. On Instagram, we witnessed a 223% increase in reach to over 57,000, while profile visits and content interactions grew by 100% to over 16,000 and 460% to 42,500, respectively.

“The output has yielded an increase in awareness of the sport, the followers on different media platforms, and a strengthening of the communications strategy,” Colin noted.

Capturing Community Stories

Beyond social media metrics, the Content & Comms Plus service played a pivotal role in highlighting the incredible stories from within the Welsh boxing community. Max Parsons reached out to clubs across Wales, giving a powerful voice to the work being done at the grassroots level.

“There is a depth of stories to share from the sport of boxing, both from an elite and community perspective,” Colin explained. “The Content & Comms Plus package was invaluable, with Max having the lead and then providing the content as well as sharing on social media.”

These stories have ranged from female-only sparring sessions in Pembrokeshire to a club in Wrexham training refugees, to Llanrumney Phoenix ABC’s work with Cardiff’s homeless. Max’s adaptability and dedication ensured that no story went untold, providing our community with the recognition it deserves.

A Springboard for Growth

As we part ways with the Content & Comms Plus service, Welsh Boxing acknowledges the crucial role it played in shaping our new full-time content and communications position. “Max and the WSA have provided the springboard to enable the full-time position to be shaped on what worked, what was well-received, and the aspirations of the audience,” Colin confirmed.

A Recommendation for the Sector

Reflecting on our experience, we highly recommend the Content & Comms Plus service to other organisations in the sector. “It is very cost-effective for a small team,” Colin concluded.

As Welsh Boxing continues to grow, we remain grateful for the strong foundation laid by the WSA's Content & Comms Plus service. The future looks bright for our sport, both online and in the community.
